Project proposals:

(please write a short project descriotion, with name of project, project description with target and fore seen results, owner of project idea, and possible organizational parnters.)

Project Name: PersonalRadio

Short description: PersonalRadio will research, create and evaluate a IP based radio which has key benefits of traditional FM radio, enhanced by social network and context aware personal content and personalized services. (Project Plan see: Attachments)

Contact person and organization: Raimo.Launonen vtt.fi, Ville.Ollikainen vtt.fi

Collaborating organizations: Kainuun Paikallisradio (Kajaus), Osumus, Lingsoft, Hitmedia, kansallinen radio-operaattori, VTT, NN

Project Volume: (man months / €)   231 man months / 2 185 000 €

Project Name: Let's learn together

Short description: Let’s learn together aims at building a mobile service that helps people in co-operating in relation to learning. People may indicate what they are hoping to learn and based on this, they may get recommendations and contacts that help them start learning. People may act in different roles: they may act as a teacher, as a co-learner or learner. The service has also a database of various kinds of learning resources that the learners may utilise. The service is a social networking application that connects people to other people and learning resources. It is built with mobile use as the main way of using.

Project Name: Future Learning Services

Short description:

Remark: This project idea is intended to start the discussion on new and future learning services - the project idea is neither complete nor fully elaborated as this should happen with interested participants.

LHow can we create new services in the field of learning, education and training for different domains, such as SMEs, universities and schools. Currently, many projects look at future trends and try to forecast potential developments. This project aims at creating open services for learning which allow new learning scenarios and enable better learning.

The project should be based on current trends and arising ideas in the field. We base our ideas on a current European project, TELMAP, which aims at identifying trends and forecasts for the domain of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) by different methods such as weak signals analysis, data mining (eg in blogs, social networks and conference proceedings). We focus here on two current and one future trend.

Trend 1: Openness

A variety of initiatives has created openly and freely accessible learning materials in the past in different domains. For many learning and training issues, high quality materials are available. However, they are currently available in typical monolithic course types, highly proprietary and hardly adaptable. Also, the rate of adoption is currently rather low - organizations and individuals still prefer to create learning materials on their own, re-inventing the wheel quite often. The challenge is to provide 1) strong user communities sharing materials with each other, 2) providing adaptation services to personalize and adapt learning materials.

Trend 2: Tablet and smartphone devices allow new opportunities of learning and training

Tablets and smartphones are obviously a current trend. However, the trend has not yet arrived in the e-learning community. Many projects focus on the adaptation of existing materials for tablet usage - the new opportunities (like using location-based services, haptic input / output opportunities, using personal devices in the classroom) are not yet fully discovered.

Trend 3: Smart objects will become a key for future learning

The Internet of Things and Ambient Intelligence are just two buzzwords for a promising trend for the learning domain. In the near future, we will be able to learn in realistic environments and interact with many types of objects around us. It is very likely that many objects around us (like machines, appliances, artefacts in museums, rooms) will have built-in intelligence - this means we will be able to interact and learn with the objects themselves in a real setting. This might be useful for simple learning tasks (e.g. to learn how to use a machine and solve problems) but also for more complex tasks (enabling new learning scenarios, accessing services through / about smart objects).

These trends are just some current trends but they will determine the future of learning services to some extent. Thus, the project aims at creating and developing new learning services which stakeholders can access and use.

Project outcome:

The main idea is to create innovative services which enable new learning scenarios and future learning opportunities in particular for SMEs - the project aims at involving both users and developers. The project will develop those services and implement and validate prototypes. All services should be made accessible through different platforms (such as apps for users or cloud services for developers). The outcome should be embedded in a user community as the central access point.

User services

Access service: This service will allow users to access open learning materials according to their preferences from different repositories and sources around the globe. It makes it possible that users create their own learning portfolios consisting of different sources.

Quality and certifciation services: One key to open learning materials is that learning processes are accreditated so people can use this in their future career. It is a key to provide certifications (for users) and quality certificates (for providers)

Community services: Sharing resources is a task which is mainly done between trusted groups of people (e.g. sharing slides with a colleague) - what is currently highly necessary is to provide recommendation mechanisms of existing materials between networks of people.

Developer services

Adaptation and authoring services: This class of services aims at providing adaptation tools for authors, modifying existing learning materials, in particular to new devices (such as tablets, to e-books, ...).

Smart object authoring: This group of services allows developers to create contents for smart objects enabling learning with / about objects in authentic environments. This means that 1) contents need to be stored accessible through the object (eg RFID), 2) services can be accessed through an object (eg contacting a tutor or a service hotline), 3) collaboration services can be reached (eg students learning together about an object).

This list of services should be discussed, further services should be envisioned and developed throughout the project.
